Job Description
Garage Operations. Staff multiple parking garages around the UVA Hospital providing exceptional customer service to every individual they encounter. Duties will include booth operations (cash/credit card handling), entry/exit machine troubleshooting, and directional control. Garage Operations run 24/7.
Safe Ride Operations. Staff provide a safe passage for current UVA students/staff with valid student/staff IDs who would otherwise have to walk alone at night by provide free van shuttle rides. The service began as a cooperative venture of Student Council and the University of Virginia Police Department in the late 1980s. Operators will be dispatched to various location throughout the boundaries of the Program to provide free rides to students/staff who have requested a ride via phone or mobile app. Safe Ride is operational during the hours that UTS services are not running. Safe Ride Operations run during the overnight hours only.
Ambassador Program. In an effort to enhance safety options for college & university communities, many public safety departments are implementing a public safety Ambassador Program in geographic areas immediately surrounding campus property that contains predominantly high density off campus student housing. The primary purpose of the Ambassador Program is to provide high visibility and high proactive engagement with members of the community in the Ambassador Patrol Zone to enhance overall safety. Ambassadors personify the face of these colleges and universities and often are the first point of contact for students, faculty, visitors, and the general public in and around these areas. Modes of transportation during an Ambassador’s patrol include foot, bicycle, and/or vehicle.

Ability to assess and evaluate situations quickly, accurately, and effectively.
Must be able to accurately follow SOP’s (Standard Operating Procedures).
Must have reliable transportation and always be punctual for assigned shifts.
Education, Training, and Certifications Required
Must possess a minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent. College education or equivalent is preferred.
Must obtain a VA DCJS 01-E Unarmed Security Officer License prior to beginning work. This course will be taught in-house and includes a full fingerprint background check, classroom instruction, and final exam. Cleary Act training will also be included in this instruction. This license must be renewed bi-annually by completing a recertification course also taught in-house.
Valid VA Driver’s License with a clean record (positive points only). CDL endorsement is preferred, but not required.

Garage and Safe Ride Operations
Provide timely notifications to our dispatch on situations relative to hazards, suspicious persons/activity and medical/other emergencies they may encounter while performing their service
Maintain reports to account for services they provide
Be approachable, proactive, and detailed orientated
Provide individuals with accurate directions, information, and assistance relative to the University of Virginia’s students, faculty, and visitors
Ambassadors
Serve as additional eyes and ears to Public Safety Departments and local law enforcement agencies
Provide timely notifications to our Command Post on situations relative to hazards, suspicious persons/activity and medical/other emergencies
Maintain reports to account for services they provide
Approachable, proactive, and aware of persons who appear lost or looking/in need of assistance. Contact is made with these persons and assistance is offered
Provide the public with accurate directions, information, and assistance relative to that college or university students, faculty, and visitors
Other Requirements
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Must be a U.S. citizen or a foreign citizen authorized to legally work in the U.S.
Must have a strong and verifiable work history with focus given to customer service positions.
Must submit to an extensive background check including: criminal history (VA State Police & FBI fingerprints), personal & professional references, employment and education verifications, and DMV.
Must maintain a neat, clean, & well-groomed appearance at all times.
Must be able to physically carry out job duties which will include up to eight hours driving a vehicle (Safe Ride Operations) and standing/sitting (Garage Operations).
Must be physically able to work in all kinds of weather environments and scenarios.
Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a 90-day probationary period.
