A graduate of the University of Richmond, Dan completed industry internships and work experiences with the New York Yankees, Richmond Renegades hockey franchise, and Richmond Coliseum. Upon graduation, Dan worked at the Richmond Coliseum as Marketing Assistant before taking promotions to Event Coordinator and eventually Operations Manager. Dan states that, during these internships, he “developed an understanding for the full picture of the industry and just how hard you have to work to be fully prepared on event day”.
Dan is recognized by the Department of Criminal Justice Services as a Subject Matter Specialist instructor, has successfully completed FEMA certification in ICS 100 & 200, NIMS 700, and IS-15 Special Event Contingency Planning, and in Special Event Risk Management from the National Center for Spectator Sports Safety & Security. Dan’s been an active participant and attendee of on-going conferences and seminars including NCS4 – National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security and IED Awareness seminars in partnership with DHS and other government agencies, most recently receiving his completion certification in “Incident Response to Terrorist Bombings” training. Dan regularly serves as a guest speaker at the University of Richmond Business School, the VCU Center for Sports Leadership, JMU’s Sports Management Dept., & Virginia State University’s Sports Management Graduate Studies Program. Dan also serves, or has recently served, on the following boards/commissions:
Private Security Services Advisory Board - Department of Criminal Justice Services – Chairman
Capital Region Airport Commission – represents Henrico County, Virginia
Glen Allen Youth Athletic Association Board of Directors – President
Virginia Association of Fairs Board of Directors – Associate Director
Virginia High School League (VHSL) Foundation Board of Directors
In May 2018, Dan was recognized by the Richmond Regional Tourism Board as the 2018 Unsung Hero of regional tourism for the positive impact RMC Events personnel has upon the millions of visitors annually to the region. In May of 2017, Dan was named the Henrico County Community Leader of the Year by ChamberRVA and the Henrico County Business Council. Dan was a finalist for the Ernst & Young Virginia Entrepreneur of the Year award in 2003.
Dan’s service to the community is best evidenced by his years of volunteerism within the Glen Allen Youth Athletics Association. Dan has served as a baseball and basketball coach within the association since 2006 and served on the Board of Directors since 2012, as president since 2014. In Dan’s tenure as president, he’s led the efforts to revitalize the associations’ four ballfields through fundraising and solid fiscal management. In January 2016, Glen Allen Youth Athletics completed a $280,000 project to replace the 50 year old field lighting with a new, energy efficient, Musco Green Lighting system. Additionally, the renovation project has or will provide for 100% underground wiring, wireless/mobile lighting control, new batting cages, new bleachers, new windscreens, 4 new wireless scoreboards, field surface improvements, and the conversion of 100% of the public walkways from gravel to pavement. With the Board’s support, Dan has also driven a “Community Work Initiative” which has resulted in over 100 jobs created by the association, serving the associations needs in umpiring, concessions management, and score clock operation. These jobs have been filled by the same community families that have participated within the association, thus keeping the dollars spent within the “Glen Allen Family”. Glen Allen Youth Athletics Association is a 4,000+ member organization striving to assist in the development of young athletes through their participation in sports, specifically softball, baseball, and basketball.
At nearly every event, Dan believes that RMC’s success is contingent upon strong integration with all parties involved including the event promoter(s), venue representatives, and local law enforcement/government officials. Below are just a few quotes from these officials that Dan and RMC Events work with regularly:
“A successful event must have a good traffic management team working together; Law Enforcement, DOT and the promoter with their parking management staff. On site event parking strategies must be a part of the Traffic Management Plan for any event. RMC Events has been involved with several events in our region and has always developed a parking strategy that incorporates local traffic needs, best use of event facilities and the flexibility to adjust as needed”.
- Mark Irving, Special Events Coordinator, VDOT
“As Point of Contact for Virginia State Police at The Meadow Event Park, I work with Dan Schmitt and his team at RMC Events on all events held there including the SFVA (250k guests). Dan has been engaged in all aspects of security/traffic management as well as having a global outlook on the overall success of the event. He has been an integral partner. I have directed my leadership staff and troopers to take direct input from Dan Schmitt and “make it happen”. Dan Schmitt and RMC Events are an absolute asset to the success of our events”.
- William Blydenburgh, Lieutenant, Virginia State Police
“I have known Dan Schmitt for over 20 years, first meeting Dan at the earlier Innsbrook After Hours venue still fine tuning his skills in major event planning. Since those early days Dan’s company, RMC Events, has provided professional event support, to include traffic management and crowd control, for most of the events within Henrico County which I was assigned as Incident Commander to include: NASCAR, State Fair of Virginia, Chili-Cook Off, Celtic Games. Without question, RMC Events, through Dan’s leadership and his strong ability to exceed the client’s desires, is the “go-to” event management agency in the Commonwealth.”
- Chris S. Alberta, Captain (Retired), Henrico County Police, Homeland Security
“RMC Events has been a dedicated and trusted vendor for us at Richmond International Raceway for many years. Dan Schmitt brings a high level of professional leadership and a positive, can-do attitude that permeates his organization. As a result, we view our relationship with RMC Events as that of a true partner. Over the years, Dan’s ability to not only meet but rather exceed expectations in delivering quality results has greatly impacted the positive guest experience we strive for at Richmond International Raceway.”
- Jeff Hedrick, Sr. Director of Operations, Richmond International Raceway
RMC Event’s motto is: Success…Built Upon Good People First. That mindset, as Schmitt explains below, makes all the difference.
“I’m fortunate enough to wake up every day and absolutely love what I do. I welcome the variety, chase opportunities, focus on flexibility, embrace the challenges, accept nothing but success, and refuse to settle for mediocrity. The RMC Events ‘difference’ is not the fact that I believe in those things, it’s that our 1800+ members of the RMC Family believe them too.”
- Dan Schmitt, Vice President, RMC Events, Inc.
Dan, his wife Sharon, and two children, Taylor and Carter reside in Glen Allen, Virginia.
